Levitt-Built Township on the Rancocas
Lots & Land in Willingboro, NJ
Welcome to Willingboro, a Burlington County township on the Rancocas Creek, built as Levitt & Sons' largest Levittown and minutes from the New Jersey Turnpike.
Willingboro is a township in Burlington County, New Jersey, on the north bank of the Rancocas Creek, a tidal tributary of the Delaware River. It sits about twenty miles northeast of Philadelphia, bordered by Route 130 to the north, the creek to the west, and neighboring Burlington and Westampton townships. Roughly 32,000 people live in its 7.8 square miles, making it one of the more substantial municipalities in the county. The township is best known for its origins as a Levittown. In 1958, Levitt & Sons began building its third and largest planned suburban community here, ultimately constructing about 12,000 homes for postwar families. The municipality briefly adopted the name Levittown by referendum in 1959, then returned to Willingboro in 1963. A landmark discrimination lawsuit by the Rev. W. R. James against Levitt & Sons helped open the community to African American homeowners, and Willingboro developed into a notably diverse suburb. Levitt's curving street layout, alliterative section names, and modest single-family homes still define the township's geography. Today Willingboro is a mature, established suburb with its own K–12 school district and a strong civic identity. Its residents commute along Route 130, Interstate 295, and the New Jersey Turnpike (Exit 5) to Philadelphia, Trenton, and the wider Delaware Valley, with NJ Transit bus service connecting the township to both cities. Recreation centers on the Rancocas Creek, where paddlers explore a tidal waterway with deep colonial history, and on township parks such as Millcreek Park, home to the annual jazz festival and community events. Rancocas State Park lies nearby. Willingboro suits buyers seeking a well-priced, established South Jersey suburb with Philadelphia access, waterfront recreation, and a community shaped by its distinctive mid-century history.
