Hunterdon County Rural Township

Lots & Land in Tewksbury, NJ

Welcome to Tewksbury Township, a rural Hunterdon County community of historic villages, preserved farmland, and horse country, with easy access to Interstate 78.

Tewksbury Township is a rural township in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, located in the northwestern part of the state within the New York metropolitan area. With about 5,900 residents spread across roughly 31 square miles, it is among the region's most celebrated examples of preserved New Jersey countryside, a landscape of rolling farmland, horse farms, and historic villages. The township's roots run deep. It was divided from Lebanon Township and became one of New Jersey's first 104 townships in 1798. Its best-known village, Oldwick, was originally called New Germantown after its German settlers in the mid-1700s and took its current name during the anti-German sentiment of World War I. Oldwick's historic district, with its colonial homes and churches, is listed on the National Register, while Pottersville, Mountainville, and Cokesbury grew around mills, taverns, and crossroads. Tewksbury's modern character is defined by its five villages — Oldwick, Fairmount, Mountainville, Cokesbury, and Pottersville — and by the extensive land preservation that keeps much of the township open. The Tewksbury Township School District serves students through eighth grade, after which they attend a regional high school. Recreation centers on preserved farms such as the 170-acre Christie Hoffman Farm Park and a network of township and land-trust preserves including Cold Brook and Hell Mountain. The township deliberately retains a low-density, largely residential and agricultural character, with commerce clustered in its small villages rather than along commercial strips. For homebuyers, Tewksbury offers an equestrian-oriented, country lifestyle with historic architecture, generous acreage, and easy access to Interstate 78, making it a sought-after choice for those seeking rural living within commuting distance of the New York region.
