Stillwater Township is a rural township in Sussex County, New Jersey, set in the Kittatinny Valley in the northwestern corner of the state. With a population of about 4,000, it is a low-density farming community with a long history of dairy agriculture and a landscape of rolling fields and lakes. The township's character is shaped by both farms and water. Dairy farming has defined Stillwater's economy and identity for generations, and the Kittatinny Valley's fertile fields still support agriculture today. Alongside the farms, a string of lakes—including the lake communities of Crandon, Plymouth, and Paulinskill Lakes—gives parts of the township a resort-flavored, seasonal character. The township's one-room-schoolhouse heritage reflects its scattered, rural settlement pattern of small crossroads and lake villages rather than a single dense center. Swartswood Lake, just outside the township's core, played a defining role in the area's history. In the early 1900s, Swartswood Lake became a major resort destination, with weekenders arriving by train at nearby Blairstown through the 1940s to stay at inns and, later, summer cabins popular with visitors from Brooklyn and New York City. That resort legacy lingers in the lake cottages and summer communities around Stillwater. Public education is split across two systems. Elementary students attend the Stillwater Township School, which consolidated five one-room schoolhouses in 1941, while students in grades seven through twelve are served by Kittatinny Regional High School in nearby Newton. For residents, Stillwater offers a genuinely rural, lake-and-farm way of life—quiet roads, open fields, and seasonal lake communities—within reach of Newton, Blairstown, and the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. It is one of the most picturesque corners of Sussex County.
