Riverdale is a small borough in northeastern Morris County, New Jersey, incorporated in 1923. It occupies a compact land area where New Jersey Route 23 and Interstate 287 meet, a location that has shaped the borough's role as a northern Morris County retail and commuter crossroads. The 2020 census counted 4,107 residents. Route 23 runs through Riverdale as a heavily traveled commercial corridor, lined with national retailers including Target, The Home Depot, BJ's Wholesale Club, and Staples, and drawing shoppers from across the region. Interstate 287, which skirts the borough's northern edge, connects Riverdale to the wider interstate network of northern New Jersey, making it convenient for commuters who work along the Route 23 and 287 corridors or elsewhere in the region. Behind the retail frontage, Riverdale is a mostly residential borough of single-family neighborhoods arranged around local streets such as the Newark-Pompton Turnpike, Riverdale Road, and the Paterson-Hamburg Turnpike. The borough's own school, Riverdale Public School, serves students through eighth grade, and a sending relationship sends high school students to Pompton Lakes High School. With a land area of roughly two square miles, Riverdale is among the more densely developed boroughs of the region, yet its residential streets remain quiet relative to the Route 23 corridor. Riverdale's origins trace to the agricultural settlement of the Pompton area, and its 1923 incorporation carved a compact borough out of what became a heavily traveled highway corridor. The borough's civic life remains deliberately small — a mayor-council government, a single K-8 school, and a handful of local organizations — even as the surrounding commercial district has grown into one of the region's busiest retail strips. Residents consequently enjoy a rare combination: big-box convenience and regional highway access on one side of town, and quiet residential streets with a neighborly, small-borough identity on the other.
