Pequannock Township is a township in northern Morris County, New Jersey, set where the Pequannock and Wanaque rivers converge to form the Pompton River near the Passaic County border. Incorporated in 1740, it is among the older municipalities in Morris County, and its long history is reflected in the historic houses, old turnpike roads, and established neighborhoods that remain today. The township's principal community is Pompton Plains, an unincorporated area and census-designated place that serves as the residential and civic center of the township, with the older riverside section known as Pequannock lying near the river. The township grew along the Newark–Pompton Turnpike, one of the early roads built to move iron ore, timber, and farm produce out of northern New Jersey. That corridor, now largely followed by Route 23, has shaped modern Pequannock as a commuter suburb with ready access to the employment centers of Wayne, Parsippany, and the broader New York metropolitan region. Interstate 80 and Interstate 287 pass nearby, reinforcing the township's position within Morris County's commuter network.
