Morristown Line Borough

For Sale in Morris Plains, NJ

Welcome to Morris Plains, a Morris County borough on NJ Transit's Morristown Line, with a historic 1848 train station and a walkable downtown.

Morris Plains is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey, situated immediately adjacent to Morristown. Its 2020 population was 6,153. A compact, largely residential community, the borough is best known for its railroad heritage and its enduring role as a commuter stop on NJ Transit's Morristown Line. The borough's growth began with the railroad. In 1848, the line was extended from Morristown through Morris Plains, and the town began to develop more rapidly around the new station. That station, a local landmark, continues to serve commuters today and anchors the borough's downtown at the intersection of Route 202 and Route 53. Morris Plains also carried a measure of industrial and institutional history. Construction of the state hospital at nearby Greystone Park began in 1874, bringing a major institution to the area, and the George Washington Coffee Company arrived in 1927, followed by other industries. Over time, the large estates and summer homes of an earlier era gave way to housing developments, and the borough took on its present suburban character. Education is organized locally and regionally. The Morris Plains School District serves students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade in its two schools, and students then attend Morristown High School through a sending relationship with the Morris School District, which also serves Morristown and Morris Township. Today Morris Plains is a walkable, family-oriented borough with a downtown near the station, tree-lined residential streets, and convenient access to Morristown's shops, restaurants, and employment. The station's presence continues to shape the borough's layout and daily rhythm, and its combination of a historic transit-oriented center, strong schools, and a small-town scale gives it a distinct place within Morris County's commuting landscape.
