Morris County Canal Township
Houses in Montville, NJ
Welcome to Montville, a Morris County township of three villages — Montville, Towaco, and Pine Brook — in the hills of northern New Jersey.
Montville is a township in Morris County, New Jersey, set in the wooded hills of the state's northern reaches about thirty miles from New York City. It spans roughly nineteen square miles and is organized around three distinct villages — Montville, Towaco, and Pine Brook — that together form a single suburban township. The neighboring communities of Boonton and Parsippany border the area, and the Interstate 287 and 80 corridors run nearby. The township's history is tied to early transportation. The Morris Canal, completed through the area in 1828, brought commercial navigation to Montville and Towaco, and the mid-nineteenth century saw Pine Brook develop as a fertile agricultural district with its own village center. During the American Revolution, the township lay on a major military route between Morristown and the Hudson River, and General George Washington's troops passed through, with Washington himself staying in the Towaco section. Montville was incorporated as a township in 1867. Today Montville is home to roughly 22,300 residents. It is served by the Montville Township School District, whose Montville Township High School, founded in 1971, is the district's sole secondary school. The township's three villages each retain a distinct small-town character, and its wooded, low-density setting distinguishes it from the more built-up towns closer to Manhattan. Montville's appeal rests on its combination of good schools, established neighborhoods, and a quieter, greener setting than many of New Jersey's commuter towns. The township's hills, mature woodlands, and lake country give it a suburban character that feels removed from the density of the city, even as the highways and rail links keep Manhattan within reach. Community life centers on the schools, local parks, and the three village centers. For homebuyers, Montville offers established single-family neighborhoods, a strong school system, and a quieter Morris County setting within commuting distance of New York City and the region's corporate centers.
