Great Swamp Gateway Township

Lots & Land in Long Hill, NJ

Welcome to Long Hill Township, a Morris County community of four villages bounded by the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge and the Passaic River.

Long Hill Township is a township in southern Morris County, New Jersey, bounded by the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge to the north and the Passaic River to the south and west. With a population of about 8,630, it is a suburban community made up of four distinct villages—Millington, Stirling, Gillette, and Meyersville—along with the early Homestead Park subdivision. The township's history reaches back to the 1730s, when European settlers farmed the land and built mills on the Passaic River in what became Millington. Originally incorporated as Passaic Township in the 1860s, the municipality changed its name to Long Hill Township in 1992, taking the name of a ridge of the Watchung Mountains that runs through the area. Long Hill's setting is defined by its two natural boundaries. To the north, the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge preserves 7,455 acres of wetlands, forest, and wildlife habitat—a nationally significant resting place for migratory birds. To the south and west, the Passaic River forms the township's edge. Between them, the communities of Millington, Stirling, Gillette, and Meyersville developed around the Gladstone Branch rail line and the mills and farms of the valley. The township is a commuter community, with three NJ Transit stations—Millington, Stirling, and Gillette—on the Gladstone Branch of the Morris & Essex Lines, providing direct rail service toward Summit, Newark, and New York City. Public education is provided by the Long Hill Township School District through eighth grade, with students attending Watchung Hills Regional High School for grades nine through twelve. For residents, Long Hill offers a village-scale Morris County lifestyle framed by preserved open space, with convenient rail access to the region's employment centers. Its mix of village centers, suburban streets, and protected wetlands gives the township a distinct, green character within commuting distance of New York City.
