Leonia is a small borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, situated just west of the George Washington Bridge in the northeastern corner of the state. With a population of about 9,300, it is one of Bergen County's compact, close-in suburbs, positioned roughly three to four miles from the bridge and about fifteen to twenty minutes from Midtown Manhattan by car or bus. The borough traces its roots to the late nineteenth century, when it was formed during the wave of Bergen County borough incorporations of the 1890s. Over the decades, Leonia developed a reputation as a residential and artistic enclave, home to a notable community of actors, writers, and artists—a legacy carried on today by organizations such as Leonia Arts. The borough is also recognized for its trees and careful streetscape, earning recognition as a Tree City for its commitment to planting and maintaining its canopy. Leonia is fundamentally a commuter town with a strong local identity. Its neighborhoods are quiet and residential, organized around Broad Avenue and the surrounding streets, with several small parks distributed through the borough. The Leonia School District serves local students and is widely regarded as a strength of the community. Recreation centers on Overpeck County Park, a more than 800-acre regional park that Leonia helped create decades ago by donating land along Overpeck Creek; today it offers sports fields, trails, and open space at the borough's edge, alongside borough parks such as Wood Park and Sylvan Park and the Leonia Swim Club. With its arts community, tree-lined streets, schools, and immediate access to the George Washington Bridge, Leonia combines small-town suburban character with one of the region's shortest commutes into New York City.
