Knowlton Township is a rural township in Warren County, New Jersey, in the northwestern corner of the state along the Delaware River. With a population of about 2,920, it is a low-density community of farmland, woodland, and small hamlets, most prominently Columbia and Delaware. The township's geography is defined by water. The Delaware River forms its western boundary, and the Paulins Kill—a tributary that drains the western portion of Warren County—flows through Knowlton before emptying into the Delaware. This river-and-kill landscape gives the township its open, agrarian character and supports fishing and rural recreation. Knowlton is a classic northwestern New Jersey farming township. Its hamlets grew up around mills, farms, and the old stage and turnpike routes that later became Route 46 and Interstate 80. The township has retained a quiet, rural identity, with most residents owning their homes and living on larger lots than in the state's denser eastern counties. Columbia, at the junction of Route 94 and Interstate 80, functions as the township's small commercial center, while Delaware is the site of the elementary school. Public education is split between two systems. Elementary students in pre-kindergarten through sixth grade attend the Knowlton Township School in Delaware, and older students are served by North Warren Regional High School in nearby Blairstown, which draws students from Knowlton and several surrounding townships. Interstate 80 runs through the township, linking Knowlton to the Delaware Water Gap to the west and to Hackettstown, Morristown, and points east toward New York City. Hiking, hunting, and fishing are part of daily life, and the township's open fields and river bottomlands give it a scenic, unpressured quality that is rare in the state. For residents, Knowlton offers a genuinely rural New Jersey setting—farms, river frontage, and open space—within commuting range of the region's larger towns.
