Kinnelon is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey, located about 33 miles west of New York City in the wooded Highlands of northern New Jersey. Incorporated in 1922, the borough takes its name from Francis S. Kinney, whose estate gave rise to the community, and it has grown into an affluent, family-oriented suburb of roughly 10,000 residents. Kinnelon is defined less by a traditional downtown than by its lakes and forests; several lake communities — most prominently the gated Smoke Rise and the Fayson Lakes section — anchor distinct parts of town and give residents their own swimming, boating, and shoreline recreation. The borough grew from a rural lake-resort setting into a commuter suburb after World War II, as former summer cottages around Fayson Lakes were converted into year-round homes and larger, newer houses filled in the wooded hills. The result is a housing stock that ranges from modest lake cottages to expansive executive homes on large, tree-covered lots, all within a municipality that has deliberately preserved its open, natural character. Kinnelon attracts families drawn to its strong K–12 public schools and its low-density, heavily wooded setting, as well as commuters who value the quiet of the Highlands while staying within reach of Manhattan. Public education is provided by the Kinnelon Public Schools, a district of about 2,200 students, while Silas Condict County Park and a network of private lake associations provide recreation close to home. Shopping and dining are found in neighboring Butler and Riverdale, keeping the borough itself largely residential and calm.
