High Bridge is a borough in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, set in the narrow valley of the South Branch of the Raritan River in the northwestern part of the county. With a population of about 3,500, it is a compact, historically layered community whose identity is inseparable from the railroad and iron industries that shaped it in the 19th century. The borough takes its name from a landmark structure: the Central Railroad of New Jersey's High Bridge, a 112-foot-high, 1,300-foot-long trestle built across the South Branch between 1859 and 1864. The railroad and its High Bridge Branch were constructed to move iron ore from the mines of Morris County to the Taylor Iron Works, later Taylor-Wharton Iron and Steel, which stood along the river.
