Hunterdon County Historic Rail Town
Rentals in High Bridge, NJ
Welcome to High Bridge, a Hunterdon County borough named for a soaring 19th-century railroad bridge, now the western terminus of NJ Transit's Raritan Valley Line and a gateway to the Columbia Trail.
High Bridge is a borough in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, set in the narrow valley of the South Branch of the Raritan River in the northwestern part of the county. With a population of about 3,500, it is a compact, historically layered community whose identity is inseparable from the railroad and iron industries that shaped it in the 19th century. The borough takes its name from a landmark structure: the Central Railroad of New Jersey's High Bridge, a 112-foot-high, 1,300-foot-long trestle built across the South Branch between 1859 and 1864. The railroad and its High Bridge Branch were constructed to move iron ore from the mines of Morris County to the Taylor Iron Works, later Taylor-Wharton Iron and Steel, which stood along the river. The area's industrial roots run even deeper, to the Union Iron Works, among the earliest ironworks in the United States, established in the 1740s. Today High Bridge is a small residential borough that has outgrown its heavy industry and remade itself around commuter rail and outdoor recreation. It sits at the western end of NJ Transit's Raritan Valley Line, a designation that earned the borough recognition as Hunterdon County's first transit village, and weekday trains connect riders to Newark Penn Station with transfers into New York. The old rail corridor has also been repurposed as the Columbia Trail, a popular multi-use path that runs through town and ties High Bridge into the region's extensive trail network. The South Branch of the Raritan, one of New Jersey's better fly-fishing rivers, runs through the borough, and Lake Solitude and its waterfall form one of the town's most scenic settings. The village core holds a station house, small businesses, and walkable streets, while the surrounding hillsides give way to Hunterdon County's farmland and open space. For buyers, High Bridge offers the combination of a historic small town, a functioning rail commute, and immediate access to trails and river recreation.
