Passaic County Labor History
Houses in Haledon, NJ
Welcome to Haledon, a Passaic County borough that played a defining role in American labor history, next door to Paterson.
Haledon is a borough in Passaic County, New Jersey, on the hills immediately above the city of Paterson. With a population of about 9,000, it is a compact, largely residential community that shares a border and much of its daily life with its larger neighbor. Haledon's setting is distinctly hilly, with residential streets climbing the ridges that rise above the Passaic River valley. This topography gives the borough a more open, elevated feel than many of its denser neighbors, while still placing residents within minutes of Paterson's commercial center and its historic industrial core. The borough holds an important place in American labor history. The Botto House, a National Historic Landmark at 83 Norwood Street, is where leaders of the Industrial Workers of the World union addressed the 25,000 striking workers of the 1913 Paterson Silk Strike. The home now houses the American Labor Museum, which interprets the history of work, workers, and the labor movement, with particular attention to the immigrant experience. That legacy gives Haledon a place in the broader story of Paterson's silk industry and remains an active educational institution. Haledon also has a notable educational footprint. Manchester Regional High School, which serves Haledon, North Haledon, and Prospect Park, is located in the borough, and parts of William Paterson University's large campus in neighboring Wayne extend into Haledon and North Haledon. For residents, Haledon offers a dense, walkable borough setting with quick access to Paterson's amenities and the broader Passaic County and New York metropolitan region. Its hillside streets, labor-history landmark, and university adjacency give it a distinctive identity within the county's urbanized core.
