Delaware Bay Historic Township
Farms & Ranches in Greenwich, NJ
Welcome to Greenwich Township, the historic Cumberland County community on the Cohansey River — home of the 1774 Greenwich Tea Burning and quiet Delaware Bay countryside.
Greenwich Township is a township in Cumberland County, New Jersey, in the rural southwestern corner of the state, where the Cohansey River meets the Delaware Bay. It covers nearly 19 square miles and has a population of about 800, centered on the historic village of Greenwich plus several smaller hamlets. The township holds a notable place in American Revolutionary history. On the night of December 22, 1774, nearly a year after the Boston Tea Party, a group of South Jersey patriots disguised as Native Americans seized a shipment of British tea and burned it in a field — an act remembered as the Greenwich Tea Burning, or the Greenwich Tea Party. A monument erected on Ye Greate Street in 1908 marks the event, and participants included Richard Howell, who later became governor of New Jersey. Today the village's colonial streetscape, the Historic Gibbon House, and the Cumberland County Prehistorical Museum preserve this layered heritage. Greenwich's economy grew from the Delaware Bay. Oystering, fishing, and shipbuilding once sustained the township, and agriculture — supported by Cumberland County's rich farmland — remains part of the local landscape. The township also includes Springtown, historically a settlement of free Black residents, adding to the area's complex social history. Education is provided through the Greenwich Township School District's elementary and middle schools, operated in partnership with Stow Creek, followed by Cumberland Regional High School. Greenwich Township appeals to those drawn to a quiet, historic, bayshore community — one where colonial history, working farmland, and the rhythms of the Delaware Bay still shape daily life, within about an hour of Philadelphia and Wilmington.
