Fredon Township is a rural municipality in Sussex County, in the northwestern corner of New Jersey. It lies along Route 94, just north of Newton, the county seat, in a region of rolling hills, farms, and protected open space that is characteristic of the state's Skylands. The 2020 census counted 3,235 residents, and the township's elevation ranges from about 480 to 960 feet, giving it a distinctly upland, pastoral character. The landscape is the defining feature of Fredon. A significant portion of the township is devoted to farmland and open space, and the community has preserved large natural areas. The Paulinskill Valley Trail, a former railroad line converted to a multi-use path, runs along the township's entire western boundary, while Kittatinny Valley State Park lies nearby with lakes and a network of converted rail trails. The Nature Conservancy's Muckshaw Ponds Preserve protects additional acreage within the township. Fredon operates as a small, close-knit community centered on its school and its parks. Lodestar Park, about 81 acres at the corner of Route 94 and Stillwater Road, provides sports fields, a playground, and a walking trail and serves as the township's recreational hub. Education runs through Fredon Township School for the elementary grades and Kittatinny Regional High School for grades seven through twelve, the latter shared with several neighboring municipalities. The township appeals to those seeking rural living, outdoor recreation, and open land within reach of Newton's services and the broader northern New Jersey and northwestern commuting corridors. It offers a quieter, more spacious alternative to the state's denser suburbs while remaining connected to the region's towns and road network.
