Ewing Township sits in Mercer County, in the heart of central New Jersey, along the east bank of the Delaware River immediately northwest of Trenton. Formally established in 1834, the township grew from an agricultural and riverfront settlement into a substantial suburban community, particularly in the decades after World War II. Today it covers about 15.6 square miles and is home to roughly 35,600 residents. The township is distinguished by the number of institutions within its borders. The College of New Jersey, a public liberal arts university whose roots date to 1855, anchors the western part of town with its campus. Ewing also hosts the Trenton-Mercer Airport, the New Jersey State Police headquarters, the New Jersey Department of Transportation headquarters, the Trenton Psychiatric Hospital, and the state's school for the deaf.
