Townhouses & Duplexes in East Amwell, NJ
Welcome to East Amwell, a rural Hunterdon County township at the base of the Sourland Mountains, where preserved farmland and more than three centuries of settlement shape daily life.
East Amwell Township is a rural municipality in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, set at the base of the Sourland Mountains in the central part of the state. The township covers about 28.7 square miles and was formed in 1846, when the original Amwell Township was split into East and West Amwell. Its fertile valley farmland attracted settlers from the early eighteenth century onward, and the village of Ringoes is regarded as one of Hunterdon County's oldest known settlements. The township also encompasses the hamlets of Weert's Corner, Larison's Corner, and a portion of Reaville. Agriculture and open space continue to define East Amwell. Working farms, preserved fields, and wooded ridgelines dominate the landscape, and residents have long supported farmland and open-space preservation that keeps the rural character intact. The Sourland Mountain region along the township's eastern edge is an ecologically significant area of forest and diabase rock, protected in part by the Sourland Conservancy and public preserves. Daily life is quiet and spread across the township's villages and farm roads, with municipal offices and the community's school centered near Ringoes. Routes 202 and 31 run through the township, providing connections to Flemington, the Hunterdon County seat, and toward Princeton and the Route 1 corridor. The East Amwell Township School District serves students through eighth grade, and secondary students attend Hunterdon Central Regional High School, one of the larger high schools in the county. Historic sites, including the East Amwell Historical Society's Clawson House museum in Ringoes, document three centuries of settlement, while the Sourland preserves and Amwell Lake Wildlife Management Area provide hiking, bouldering, and bird watching close to home. For residents, East Amwell offers a deliberately rural, low-density way of life with preserved history and protected open space, within commuting distance of central New Jersey's employment centers.
