Rural Hunterdon County Township

Townhouses & Duplexes in Delaware, NJ

Welcome to Delaware Township, a rural Hunterdon County community of rolling farmland and historic villages, home to Green Sergeant's Covered Bridge near the Delaware River.

Delaware Township is a rural township in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, occupying a landscape of rolling farmland, wooded hills, and winding country roads just east of the Delaware River. Part of the township lies on the Hunterdon Plateau, while its southern reaches descend into the Amwell Valley. As of the 2020 census, the township had a population of about 4,560, spread across a low-density area where fields, pastures, and preserved open space still define the character of the land. The township's identity is rooted in its agricultural past and its collection of historic hamlets. Sergeantsville, the community's principal village, was first settled around 1700 and remains a small crossroads of stone houses and historic buildings. Nearby, Green Sergeant's Covered Bridge carries a quiet road across Wickecheoke Creek between Sergeantsville and Rosemont. Constructed in 1872 and rebuilt in 1961, it is the last surviving historic covered bridge in New Jersey and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, drawing visitors who come to see the structure and its pastoral setting. Delaware Township has deliberately held onto its rural scale. Farmland preservation, historic districts, and large-lot zoning have kept development sparse, so that most homes sit on an acre or more and the township retains the working-landscape feel that distinguishes much of Hunterdon County. This is not a place of subdivisions and strip malls; services and shopping are reached in nearby Flemington, Lambertville, and the surrounding towns. That rural character coexists with real regional access. The township is positioned within commuting reach of Princeton and Philadelphia to the south and the Route 78 corridor to the north, while the Delaware River and its canal towpath run along the western edge. For people seeking privacy, open space, and a historic small-community feel, Delaware Township represents one of central New Jersey's most intact examples of preserved countryside.
