Bergen County Commuter Borough

Farms & Ranches in Allendale, NJ

Welcome to Allendale, an affluent Bergen County borough with a village downtown, its own NJ Transit station, and the Celery Farm nature preserve at its heart.

Allendale is a small, affluent borough in northern Bergen County, New Jersey, set within the New York City metropolitan area roughly 25 miles northwest of Manhattan. It sits in the Saddle River valley, surrounded by a ring of similarly upscale commuter towns including Ramsey, Saddle River, Ho-Ho-Kus, and Waldwick, and it functions primarily as a quiet residential community for professionals working in New York City and northern New Jersey. The borough grew out of a nineteenth-century farming settlement along the Erie Railroad, and the arrival of the railroad in the mid-1800s set the pattern for its development as a commuter suburb. Its downtown reflects that evolution, with a compact, walkable commercial core of storefronts, restaurants, and civic buildings along the rail corridor. Over time the community transitioned from farmland to a well-to-do residential borough, and today it is among the more desirable small towns in the region, with a population of about 6,800. Allendale is perhaps best known among residents and visitors for the Celery Farm, a 107-acre freshwater wetland preserve managed for birdwatching and quiet recreation. The preserve's trails and boardwalks are a distinctive local amenity and give the borough an unusual connection to open space and wildlife within a densely developed county. The borough's appeal rests on a combination of factors: a highly regarded local school system feeding Northern Highlands Regional High School, a rail station with direct service toward Hoboken and New York, a walkable downtown, and housing stock that ranges from period homes to newer construction. These attributes have made Allendale a stable, family-oriented community where residents tend to stay for the long term.
