Allendale is a small, affluent borough in northern Bergen County, New Jersey, set within the New York City metropolitan area roughly 25 miles northwest of Manhattan. It sits in the Saddle River valley, surrounded by a ring of similarly upscale commuter towns including Ramsey, Saddle River, Ho-Ho-Kus, and Waldwick, and it functions primarily as a quiet residential community for professionals working in New York City and northern New Jersey. The borough grew out of a nineteenth-century farming settlement along the Erie Railroad, and the arrival of the railroad in the mid-1800s set the pattern for its development as a commuter suburb.
