Perth Amboy is a city in northeastern Middlesex County, New Jersey, positioned at the head of Raritan Bay where the Raritan River meets the Atlantic's inner waters. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of about 55,400, making it one of the largest municipalities in the county and a dense, urban community within the New York metropolitan area. The city holds a distinctive place in New Jersey's colonial history. The area was inhabited by the Lenape people for thousands of years before European settlement, and Perth Amboy became one of the state's earliest colonial towns, serving for a time as the capital of East Jersey. Its strategic position on Raritan Bay made it a center of commerce, transportation, and immigration, and later a manufacturing hub. Landmarks from this long history survive along the waterfront, including the Proprietary House, the colonial-era home of the royal governor, and the Perth Amboy Ferry Slip, once a vital link in New York Harbor and now a museum listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today the city is a vibrant, majority-Latino community with a dense urban fabric of row houses, small apartment buildings, and multifamily housing. Its waterfront has been rebuilt around a promenade, marina, and restaurants, while the working-class streets inland retain the character of a compact, walkable city.
