Colonial Iron Furnace Township

Apartments in Oxford, NJ

Welcome to Oxford, a rural Warren County township in northwest New Jersey whose colonial Oxford Furnace and Shippen Manor anchor a quiet agricultural landscape along Route 31.

Oxford is a rural township in Warren County, in the northwestern corner of New Jersey, set amid farmland and wooded ridges west of the Delaware River. The 2020 census counted 2,444 residents. New Jersey Route 31 runs through the township, connecting its village center to Washington to the south and the county's wider road network. Oxford's history is among the deepest in the region's iron industry. Iron ore was discovered in the area in the early 1700s, and in 1741 Jonathan Robeson built the Oxford Furnace, a charcoal blast furnace that produced its first pig iron in 1743 — the third furnace erected in colonial New Jersey and the first where iron ore was actually mined. In 1835, the furnace became the site of America's first successful "hot blast" iron process, a milestone in American metallurgy. The furnace and the surrounding district, including the eighteenth-century Shippen Manor, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today Oxford is a quiet, predominantly residential and agricultural township. Most residents own their homes, and the community has a suburban-rural mix, with a village center and open countryside. Public education is provided by the Oxford Township School District for pre-kindergarten through eighth grade at Oxford Central School, after which students attend the Warren Hills Regional School District for secondary grades. The township's identity remains tied to its landscape and its history. Farms, woods, and the Oxford Mountain ridge define the setting, while the preserved furnace and manor keep the colonial iron heritage visible in daily life. For residents, Oxford offers a low-density, historically rich community within reach of the Lehigh Valley and the larger towns of northwest New Jersey.
