Jefferson Township occupies the northern tier of Morris County, New Jersey, where the wooded ridges and lakes of the northwestern Highlands begin to define the landscape. Incorporated by an act of the New Jersey Legislature in 1804, it is the northernmost municipality in Morris County and today is home to roughly 20,500 residents spread across two distinct developed areas: the Milton and Oak Ridge section and the shoreline of Lake Hopatcong. Lake Hopatcong is the anchor of local life and identity. The largest freshwater lake in New Jersey, it gives Jefferson Township more shoreline frontage than any other community on the lake. Around it, a collection of small lake neighborhoods—Lake Shawnee, Cozy Lake, White Rock, and others—mixes year-round homes with seasonal retreats, and the lake itself remains a center for boating, fishing, and swimming through the warmer months. Away from the water, Jefferson Township is shaped by its terrain. The Morris County park system's Mahlon Dickerson Reservation lies largely within the township, and its Headley Overlook ranks among the highest points in the county park system. The Pine Swamp trail reaches the highest elevation in Morris County at 1,395 feet, and the county-owned Berkshire Valley Golf Course adds another outdoor anchor. These public lands give much of the township a distinctly green, wooded backdrop. Jefferson Township functions as a self-contained suburban community within commuting range of the region's employment centers. Routes 15 and 23, together with Interstate 80, provide the township's highway connections, linking residents to Dover, Morristown, and points east toward New York City. A single K–12 school district, the Jefferson Township Public School District, serves the township and operates Jefferson Township High School as its only high school. For residents, Jefferson Township offers a blend of lake recreation, preserved open space, and a small-town civic structure—a community that grew up around a lake and a railroad-era resort economy and has settled into a stable, family-oriented Morris County suburb.
