Historic Hunterdon County Borough

Apartments in Glen Gardner, NJ

Welcome to Glen Gardner, a small Hunterdon County borough with 18th- and 19th-century architecture along Main Street, set on the ridge above Spruce Run Reservoir.

Glen Gardner is a small borough in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, tucked into the rolling hills of the state's western Skylands. It sits along New Jersey Route 31, a north–south corridor that links the county's towns and, a few miles south, meets Interstate 78. The borough occupies a narrow footprint on the high ground between the Musconetcong Mountain to the north and the Spruce Run valley to the south, giving it a ridge-top setting with long views over the surrounding farmland. The borough traces its name and origins to the Gardner family, whose chair and frame manufacturing anchored the local economy in the 19th century. Glen Gardner was incorporated as a borough on March 26, 1919, carved from portions of Lebanon and Bethlehem townships, and it ceded some land to Hampton borough in 1931. Today, Main Street preserves the 18th- and 19th-century architecture of that earlier era, and the borough retains the quiet, close-set streets of a small Hunterdon town. For a community of roughly 1,700 people, Glen Gardner benefits from its position in a well-connected corner of the county. Clinton, with its landmark Red Mill and a walkable main street of shops and restaurants, lies just to the south, and Flemington, the county seat, is a short drive east. Spruce Run Recreation Area, built around the state's third-largest reservoir, begins practically at the borough's edge, offering swimming, boating, and fishing. Day-to-day life in Glen Gardner is unhurried and largely residential, with a mix of historic homes and newer construction. The borough's small scale means most households rely on the surrounding towns for daily errands, while Route 31 and Interstate 78 put commuters within reach of employment centers in central and northern New Jersey. The compact downtown includes a general store and a few local eateries, and the community gathers around seasonal events and the nearby parks.
